Morrain

Page history last edited by Capellan 12 years, 5 months ago

The Kingdom  of Morrain - also known as the Argent Vale, for the large silver deposits found there - lies in the far north of the world.  Ruled by the wise and well-loved King Mirias Stormwarden, the people of Morrain (who call themselves the 'Immorayn') are a hardy frontier folk of prospectors, foresters and ranchers.  This document is intended to provide a brief overview of the Kingdom.

Climate: Morrain has only two real seasons; a warm, but wet summer (often marked by lightning storms) and a long, cold winter, with deep snows and ice-choked rivers.  'Spring' and 'Autumn' are more conceptual than actual seasons, being merely brief periods of transition between Summer and Winter.

Geography: Morrain itself is a land of moors, steppe and forest.  Little of the land makes for good farming, except along the borders of the Morro River, which bisects the Kingdom.  North lies the massive saltwater expanse of  Valfors Bay, on the shores of which can be found the capital city, Galaron.  To the east lie the towering Ul-Dominor Mountains, and the ogre-plagued Gendram Hills.  Morrain is also ringed by three forests: the Anseur Forest to the north-west (home of an independent kingdom of elves), the Ashwood (bastion of the wild Blackthorn Druids) in the east, and the forbidding Witch Wood in the south-west.

Culture: the Imorrayn are a hardy and independent people.  They value courage, honesty and hard work.  Most settlements are small and close-knit.  People are used to helping - and relying on help from - their neighbors.  Offering hospitality to travelers is a particularly strong tradition here.

Religion: Refer to the separate Religions page.

Races: Morrain is a human kingdom, but most other civilized races are welcome here.  Halflings are rare, as they do not like the cold.  Elves and half-elves are particularly well-intergrated in society.  Morrain offered sanctuary to the elven peoples in a time of hardship, and the long-lived elven people remember that kindness and return it with their loyalty.  Only half-orcs, usually being the product of orcish raids, suffer any prejudice in Morrain.

Adventuring Classes: All the adventuring classes can be found in Morrain, though as this is a wild, frontier nation, there are higher than normal proportions of rangers, druids and barbarians.  Of all the classes, wizards are the most rare, as the kingdom lacks the libraries and centers of learning that such studies require, but small numbers of such learned folk do exist.

Settlements: Some of the major settlements of Morrain include:

  • Bone Hollow (pop. 1400) - a unique settlement where a long-ago act of kindness created a mixed community of orcs and humans.  Bone Hollow is a haven for half-orcs, who comprise fully half the population.
  • Bread-In-Hand (pop. 950) - the only large settlement of Halflings in Morrain, B read-In-Hand is famous for its baked goods and cheeses.
  • Cillamar (pop. 3000) - the 'second city' of the realm, gateway to the mineral wealth of the Ul-Dominor mountains ... and to the mysteries of the fabled Castle Whiterock.
  • Far Cirque (pop. 1100) - a well-hidden and magically-protected settlement of gem-miners, concealed somewhere in the Ul-Dominor mountains.
  • Galaron (pop. 8500) - the only true city in Morrain, and the nation's capital.
  • Hallowbrook (pop. 50) - a once bustling town that has been stricken by a curse and is now all but empty.
  • Mystenmere (pop. 1800) - an Imorrayn settlement on the border of the elven kingdom of Anseur.
