The Kingdom of the Sun

Page history last edited by Capellan 3 years, 9 months ago

The core realm of the setting is the Kingdom of the Sun (Takhet-Ra) . This powerful Kingdom is shaped something like an immense letter "T". The top bar of the "T" is at the north of the country, and comprised of the coastline of the Sea of Islands - so called because of the many independent island nations found within it. This coast is dotted with many settlements, great and small.

The upright bar of the "T", meanwhile, is the Great River. This mighty waterway wends almost due north from its distant - and unknown - source in the southern mountains, to empty into the Sea of Islands many hundreds of miles distant.

Mighty Chelim-Ra, City of the Sun, sits bestride the Great River. Here, the Monak-Ra (Sun King) himself resides. There are hundreds of other settlements along the river, many of them mighty cities in their own right, but none can compare to the fiery glow of Chelim-Ra's gold-capped ziggurats.

The native peoples of the Kingdom are humans, elves (and half-elves), goblins and halflings. The human inhabitants are the most numerous, and tend toward coppery skin tones in the north, growing steadily darker the further south one travels. Dwarves in the Kingdom generally hail from the great mountains in the far south, and are often very dark-skinned. Half-Orcs are found mostly in the eastern parts of the Kingdom, due to the bordering Kizhite Empire, which has a substantial orcish population. Gnomes are not native to the Kingdom, but a few have come to the region as travellers from distant lands.

Travel west from the Great River, and south from the coast, and one enters a harsh, sun-baked land of dry earth. Most of the land is home only to monsters and nomads. Only a few scattered communities, ranging in size from a few hundred to a few thousand souls, are permanently sited here. Each marks the site of a source of drinkable water. There are a dozen of these in all, and they call themselves the "Free Towns", because they make no formal oaths of fealty to the Kingdom of the Sun. That the Sun King could conquer them if he wished is not in doubt, but the cost of administering the land would be burdensome. As long as the "Free Towns" pay tribute, they are likely to be left unmolested by their powerful neighbour.
