Whiterock Session Fifty-Four

Page history last edited by Capellan 11 years, 8 months ago

Zabrit heads off to recruit aid from her druidic colleagues.  Shortly after she does so, William gets a sending from the Duergar: "The corpse is in the usual place".

So the group teleports back to Whiterock to pick the body up.  Though apparently they don't have any actual plans for it.  They just don't want the Duergar to have it.  Or something.

While collecting the body, they encounter a Derro, who gives his name as Kugah.  He warns them that the Duergar plan to betray them, as their usefulness to the grey dwarves is nearly at an end.  "Maybe the next time you are summoned here; or maybe the time after that; it will be a trap.  Come prepared."  In exchange for this warning, Kugah expresses the hope that the group will help his people escape the Duergar's domination, and "go away from this terrible place, where it is silent all the time.  All the world whispers!  But not here!  Here is silent."

The group express their lack of surprise about potential Duergar treachery, and avoid making any firm commitments to Kugah.  He leaves.

Mei Ling stops into the library to speak to Lo Ren and see if he has any advice for facing Cadavag.  He does: "It is likely he will have access to powerful death effects and negative energy attacks.  Protect yourself against those as best you can."

The adventurers then return to Cillamar ... and split up to go drinking (Mei Ling and Zook) or pursue an intimate encounter with their spouse (William).  Such dedication!

Unfortunately, Cadavag has no intention of resting on his laurels.  A Hezrou demon appears in the city, murdering dozens of people with powerful spells while shouting the taunt "Cadavag sends his greetings, meat!".  The group initially responds to this with something less than vigour. "It can teleport, and we haven't prepared any spells that would held us track or contain it.  We'll get to it tomorrow."  The demon, however, appears a second time, slaughtering more innocents, and the heroes decide to try make at least some effortThe demon's attacks were on heavily populated areas.  Seeing that the Seneschal's keep is being swamped with crowds of anxious civilians, who hope the city guards will protect them, they deduce that the third attack will probably take place there.  So they lay in wait.

The demon does indeed appear, quickly slaughtering another dozen townsfolk.  When attacked by the group, it chortles "Ah, Cadavag warned me about you." and unleashes a terrible, blasphemous curse that leaves most of the group reeeling.  Zook is the only one completely unaffected, due to being too far away.  About fifty more civilians also die from the curse.

A fierce battle ensues.  The demon is powerful, and has several spoiling attacks that make it hard for the group to harm it, but it is only one creature, and soon weight of numbers begin to tell.  Bleeding heavily from one last massive wound inflicted by Lady Talbalt, it teleports away, this time permanently.

The demon's rampage has cost the lives of nearly two hundred people, so any celebration of the group's victory is fairly muted.

The next day, Zook teleports Lady Talbalt and some other advisors out to Eldoran lands, where they will pick out a battle site.  The plan is for the group to lure Cadavag's army to this site.  The humans will then offer battle, from carefully prepared defensive positions.  While Cadavag's troops are committed, the adventurers rescued from beneath the Temple of Denithae will stage a diversionary attack on Cadavag's rearguard.  The purpose of this is to draw off his reserves and leave him with the minimum number of guards.

Once this is accomplished, the group will mount the real attack on Cadavag himself, and hopefully defeat him.

Hopefully.
