Whiterock Plot Hooks

Page history last edited by Capellan 12 years, 6 months ago

'Hawk'

A man from the Widow Canty's distant past, and seemingly the love of the old woman's life.  It appears he was something of a "Robin Hood" figure, as well as one of the last "independant" thieves in Cillamar, before the thieves' guild took firm control of all such activities.  All indications are that the Widow herself was an equally notorious rogue known as "Raven".  The half-elven woman known as "Auntie" indicated that both Raven and Hawk disappeared shortly before the guild took over.  William would like to track down Hawk, if he is still alive.  It's possible that more could be learned from Auntie, or by returning to Beeton to speak with the Widow.  This may also be a way to make contact with the thieves' guild, if that was desired: William would like to learn more about this organisation and learn how ruthless it might be.

The Outer Gods

Strange and terrible creatures from the outer planes.  Are worshipped by a deranged group of mutated cultists, who have dire plans for Cillamar.  They are led by a mysterious figure named Tsathar Rho. The Outer Gods are ancient deities of the races from before the rise of men, elves and dwarves: the serpent folk and other foul species.  It is said that the blood of these ancient races still runs in the veins of some modern families, and that those with the taint are the tools - whether they know it or not - of the Outer Gods.

It is unclear if there is a connection between the cult and the Duergar in Castle Whiterock (such as the Impressario, and presumably the Thane he serves) - there were several Derro with the cult, and these crazed dwarves often work at the behest of the Duergar.

Slavers

A group of slavers were operating out of Castle Whiterock.  The camp there has been destroyed, but they apparently had allies in Cillamar, probably the now-missing Mortimer Umberwood, owner of Umberwood Coffins.  A scrap of partially burned paper was found in the slaver leader's room; it had the name of his business on it, and he has now fled the city with most of the company's assets.  They definitely have connections with the Duergar in Castle Whiterock.

Ethnic Tensions

There are simmering ethnic tensions in Cillamar.  Apparently the streets are not safe after dark for southerners (such as Mei Ling), especially in the slums area.  This is due to a large influx of refugees in the past two years.  There is civil war in the empire of Zan'an, and supporters of all three factions in the war have fled north, bringing their animosities with them.  This, coupled with the fact that many of the refugees are desperate enough to work for a pittance - or to steal to survive, if they must - has caused considerable economic hardship and a strong backlash against the outsiders.

The group has taken a hand in the situation by assisting some refugees to create a new settlement amidst the ruins of Castle Whiterock.  They are also working to encourage more refugees to join them.  Both these policies have put them at odds with the local Thieves Guild, who also seem to have plans for the refugees.  It's likely that the racist group known as the "Truefolk" are also not well-disposed toward the group.

The suggestion has been floated that at some point the group should head south and see if they can help resolve the war, thereby putting an end to the refugee crisis.

Catacombs under the Temple

There are extensive tunnels beneath the temple of Denithae in Cillamar, the origin and purpose of which are not clear.  In particular, there is a room with several statue-like pillars, each depicting a figure wearing the holy symbol of good (or at least, non-evil) deities.  These pillars radiate transmutation magic.  There is also a room with gates to the elemental planes (and to a small demiplane).  The purpose of these gates - and of where the sixth, unfinished gate might have been meant to go - is not known.

Order of the Waxing Moon

An order of monks to which Melchin belonged.  Traditional rivals of Mei Ling's order, they have a mountain stronghold somewhere east of Castle Whiterock.  It is not known if they will return to plague the group further.  They are known to a secretive and self-interested bunch, with unique martial arts techniques.

Sleep of Ages

It has now been learned that Lady Chauntessa's interest in ancient books stems from her search for the counter to a powerful curse called the sleep of ages.  The group has dicovered that the cure to the curse is specified by the caster at the time of implementing the curse.  Lady Chauntessa seems to have some idea of who the caster might be, but has indicated that the group are not yet ready to face that challenge.

The Fane of Justicia

Lady Talbalt's father took part in a church-sponsored attempt to slay the red dragon which lairs in Whiterock Mountain.  After the group recovered some of his belongings and returned them to Lady Talbalt, she informed them that the paladins and clerics of Justicia created a safe haven in the mountain: a protected fane lying somewhere close to the underground river.  Lady Talbalt could not give any more information - that was all that was mentioned in her father's correspondence - but asked the group to keep their eyes out for signs of the other members of her father's expedition.

Restore the Order of the Dawning Sun

The group has located the lost library of the Order of the Dawning Sun, and its time-trapped guardian, the monk Lo Ren.  Although unable to leave the library, Lo Ren is able to teach the skills of his order to those who wish to learn.  The opportunity thus exists to rebuild the Order.  Lo Ren is also keen to trade knowledge with the outside world.  The library is immense, but contains no information relating to the past thousand years, as it has been sealed off from the outside world for a millenium.

Green Slime

The earth spirit Vulgaris, who lives on the uppermost level of Duergar-controlled territory in the mountain, seeks green slime.  She says she will pay well for the substance, though why she would want it, she has not said.

Missing Trade Ships

Word has come from the north that two of the summer trade ships have gone missing.  This is a pretty significant economic blow, as most of Morrain's trade with the east is conducted by these ships.

Ul Dominor Mountains

This massive mountain range runs along Morrain's eastern border.  It is wild territory, filled with monsters and lacking any real roads - just a few mountain tracks.  Blocked completely by snow in the winter, it is a formidable barrier to trade even in the warmer seasons.  This provides some protection to the kingdom - there is no risk of invasion when there is no way to send or supply an army over the mountains - but it does limit economic contact with the east as well.  The group is considering exploring the mountains and attempting to find or create a viable trade road through the area.

Obelisks of Chaos / Lord Eldoran

The group were driven out of the caves containing the obelisks of chaos, and wish to return and finish the task.  These caves are located on the lands of Lord Eldoran, whom the group believe caused the curse on Morrick Mansion.  A similar curse was also responsible for the corruption of the sentient tree Ruinheart.  At some point, the group hopes to find conclusive evidence of Lord Eldoran's crimes.

Kiss of the Spider

Zook was kissed by a powerful spider-fey while the group were in the faerie realms. This has has some unforeseen consequences.
