Whiterock Session Forty-Eight

Page history last edited by Capellan 11 years, 9 months ago

Once the group is in a safe location, they use William's telepathic bond to learn more of Kohta Soulsight's story.

The giantess explains that the ogres and other giants are being stirred up by the fury of Grulag-Dur, who is the very "spirit of giants".  Grulag-Dur's rage has been cased by the kidnapping of his wife, Blodeuwedd (Bluh/dye/weth).  The identity of the kidnapper is unknown; all attempts to divine this information were unsuccessful.  However, Cadavag - a powerful cleric - was able to ascertain that Blodeuwedd was taken against her will, and was being held in Cillamar.  This is alarming news, since it means the giants will soon be on the march toward the city, endangering the group's friends there, and almost certainly putting the group's own settlement at Whiterock right in the path of the invasion.

The group decides to return Kohta to her people, to rally opposition to Cadavag, while they return to Cillamar.  They have two objectives.  The first is to try and locate Blodeuwedd, so she can be returned to Grulag-Dur.  The second is to return to the hidden temple below Cillamar, and attempt to restore the petrified figures there to flesh.

As is often the way of things, the second objective is achieved first.  From the eight de-petrified figures, the group are able to piece together some degree of history of Tsathar Rho,  This wizard pursued any trace of lost mystical knowledge, exploring ancient ruins and poring over equally-ancient tomes.  Initially, this research seems to have been well-intentioned, but something Rho uncovered must have corrupted him, for as time went on the knowledge he pursued became ever more dark.  It seems he has now set himself to restoring the Outer Gods to the world; a goal that would lead - at best - to the destruction or enslavement of all intelligent life.  Having been thwarted from one attempt to call back his dark masters, Rho is now attempting to open a gate to their eldritch realm ... a gate that lies somewhere deep beneath Castle Whiterock!

With this new found intelligence, William puts his own divinatory powers to the test.  A question about Rho's location reveals that he is protected from divination - which the group takes as evidence that he is the one responsible for Blodeuwedd's abduction.  They also ascertain that Blodeuwedd has been trapped inside three black diamonds.  A cryptic clue suggests that one of these gems is in the possession of Bratand Ost.

Ost is of course no friend of the heroes, but they arrange a meeting with him nonetheless.  The king of thieves is not very impressed by their impassioned plea that he hand over the gem he purchased in order to 'save the city' (the argument that he would die if the city is sacked is just met with a smirk).  However, when the heroes agree to pay him the costs he incurred to gain the item, Ost agrees to make the sale 'as a gesture of goodwill'.  He also reveals that he was the agent by which the other two gems were sold: one to Lady Eldoran, and the other to the Thane of the Duergar.

The heroes must now attempt to recover those two gems, as well ...
